Sun World Fansipan Legend – A journey of a lifetime
Sun World Fansipan Legend is not merely a tourism development—it stands as a powerful symbol of Vietnam’s aspiration to reach new heights.
Located in Sa Pa Ward, Lao Cai Province, amid the majestic landscape of the Hoàng Liên Sơn range, Sun World Fansipan Legend is a world-class cultural tourism complex and cable car system, invested in and operated by Sun Group. More than just opening up access to the “Roof of Indochina” for millions of visitors, it has become a symbol of Vietnam’s ambition to elevate its natural beauty onto the global stage.

In November 2013, Sun Group broke ground on the cable car system to the summit of Fansipan, partnering with Doppelmayr—one of the world’s leading cable car manufacturers from Austria. The Fansipan cable car was built with a clear mission: to turn the dream of reaching the 3,143-meter “roof of Indochina” into reality for all visitors.
Over more than 800 days and nights, thousands of engineers and workers from Vietnam and around the world labored under extreme conditions, transporting 35,000 tons of materials through the dense Hoàng Liên forest to construct the system. Completed with absolute safety standards, the project was immediately recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest three-rope cable car system (6,292.5 meters) and the cable car with the greatest vertical difference between departure and arrival stations (1,368.93 meters).
Since February 2016, the journey to conquer Fansipan has become far more accessible, turning what was once a formidable challenge into an achievable experience for millions. The Fansipan cable car—officially inaugurated that month—marked the first milestone of Sun World Fansipan Legend, opening the path to the summit for visitors of all ages.
Following the cable car, Sun Group continued to introduce a series of new attractions and infrastructure, shaping a richly diverse and captivating destination. Among them is the Mường Hoa mountain railway—the most modern of its kind in Vietnam—launched in March 2018. Connecting Hotel de la Coupole – MGallery in Sa Pa town center to the cable car departure station, the railway reduces travel time to just six minutes, compared to 15–20 minutes by car along steep mountain roads.
Another highlight is the Fansipan summit funicular, which transports visitors from the cable car station to the peak—eliminating the need to climb 600 stone steps to reach the 3,143-meter summit.
Stretching from an altitude of 2,900 meters to the very top, the Sun World Fansipan Legend spiritual and cultural complex comprises 12 architectural works inspired by traditional Vietnamese pagodas from the 15th and 16th centuries. At its heart is Kim Sơn Bảo Thắng Tự—the largest Buddhist architectural structure on Fansipan and one of the few spiritual sites in the world situated at an elevation above 3,000 meters.
Complementing the complex is the Great Amitabha Buddha statue, one of its most remarkable highlights. Crafted from thousands of copper plates, it has been recognized by the Asia Records Organization as the highest-altitude bronze Amitabha Buddha statue in Asia.

Beyond its spiritual significance, Sun World Fansipan Legend has transformed the area into a “floral kingdom in the highlands,” where vibrant blooms flourish year-round—from tulips and lavender to climbing roses, and especially the 40 endemic species of rhododendrons that burst into color each spring.
At the cable car station, visitors can explore Vietnam’s largest rose valley, spanning 50,000 square meters and home to more than 300,000 rose bushes across 150 rare varieties. Recognized as a national record in 2020, this valley also marks the birthplace of Sa Pa’s signature Rose Festival.
At the foot of Mount Fansipan, Sun Group has created Bản Mây as a “living cultural village,” representing the ethnic communities of Sa Pa and the Northwest, including the H’Mông, Dao, Tày, Giáy, and Xa Phó. Traditional houses have been carefully relocated and preserved in their original form, vividly recreating the cultural spaces, handicrafts, spiritual practices, and culinary traditions of each group.
What makes Bản Mây truly distinctive is its people—local residents whose authenticity, warmth, and traditional attire bring the space to life. Here, the cultural identity of the Northwest exists almost outside the flow of time, untouched by modernity and urbanization, preserving its original vibrancy in the most genuine way.
Since its inauguration, Sun World Fansipan Legend has played a pivotal role in reshaping Sa Pa’s tourism landscape. In 2016, the destination welcomed over 1.2 million visitors for the first time, a figure that rose to 3.2 million by 2019. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Lao Cai Province has emerged as a standout in tourism recovery and growth, consistently ranking among the top destinations in Vietnam for tourism revenue during major holidays. In 2024 alone, Sa Pa welcomed more than 4.6 million visitors and is targeting 5.8 million arrivals in 2025.

The destination has also created meaningful opportunities for sustainable local development. More than 60% of Sun World Fansipan Legend’s workforce consists of ethnic minority residents from Lao Cai Province, who are professionally trained, work in a structured environment, and enjoy stable incomes. This development model not only improves livelihoods but also plays a vital role in preserving indigenous cultural identity.
Beyond that, Sun World Fansipan Legend has helped elevate Sa Pa onto the international stage, earning a series of prestigious accolades. The destination was named “World’s Leading Cultural Tourist Attraction” by the World Travel Awards (WTA) for two consecutive years (2019 and 2020), and “World’s Leading Natural Landscape Tourist Attraction” in 2020. In 2023, it continued its winning streak, being recognized as a “Leading Iconic Destination of Asia” at the Asia Awards in Singapore, and as an “Outstanding Spiritual Complex in Asia-Pacific” at an awards program in India.
From the cable car system to world-class tourism experiences infused with local cultural identity, Sun Group’s journey over more than a decade since breaking ground on the Fansipan cable car has been one of remarkable pride. As Trinh Xuan Truong, former Secretary of the Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee (now Secretary of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Party Committee), remarked at the 10th anniversary of the Fansipan cable car project on November 19, 2023: “Over the past 10 years, Sun Group has done three things for Sa Pa: it has awakened Sa Pa, enhanced the beauty of Sa Pa, and ensured sustainable development for Sa Pa.”
