Culture Trip names Sa Pa among the 8 best destinations in Southeast Asia

Culture Trip writer Leslie Finlay describes Sa Pa as a peaceful town perched high in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range of northern Vietnam, evoking the trekking hotspots of South Asia. The majestic highland landscapes combined with the long-established culture of Lao Cai province have forged an identity entirely distinct from the rest of Vietnam:

“High in the Hoang Lien Son mountains of Northern Vietnam is the remote village of Sa Pa, itself more reminiscent of the South Asian trekking hotspots than of regional jungles and beaches. Aside from the breathtaking beauty of the highlands, the culture that has developed over time in the Lao Chai Province of Vietnam is unlike the rest of the country, home to several ethnic tribal groups that settled in the region generations ago and have since established their autonomous identities after decades of strife among Vietnamese independence fighters and French imperialists”, the article notes.

The majestic natural beauty and distinctive indigenous culture have earned Sa Pa a place on Culture Trip’s list of the eight most amazing destinations in Southeast Asia.

Yet Culture Trip particularly emphasizes that Sa Pa’s greatest draw today is Fansipan Peak- the “Roof of Indochina” standing at 3,143 meters above sea level.

This is not the first time Sa Pa has caught the eye of international media. In 2023, Condé Nast Traveler named it one of the 50 most beautiful small towns in the world. In 2024, the “town in the clouds” ranked among Tripadvisor’s Top 5 Trending Destinations worldwide. Most recently, in early 2026, Condé Nast Traveler again included Sa Pa in its list of the 53 most beautiful small towns on the planet, underscoring the enduring appeal of this misty highland destination for international travelers.

The record-breaking cable car system has made the dream of conquering the “Roof of Indochina” accessible to visitors of all ages.

Where the journey to the summit once required multi-day treks, the Sun World Fansipan Legend cable car system, launched in 2016, has opened the way for a far wider range of visitors - from the elderly to young children - to reach the peak with ease. The experience begins with the Muong Hoa funicular, which carries guests through the valley and across terraced rice fields, before the Guinness World Record three-cable line continues the journey through Hoang Lien National Park up to the 3,143-meter summit.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the cultural life of the Northwest ethnic groups at Ban May Village, located below the cable car station.

The Fansipan experience has also expanded, giving travelers more reasons to linger rather than simply summit and return. At the base, Ban May Village recreates the cultural life of Northwest ethnic communities through traditional houses, handicrafts, festivals, folk songs and dances, and local cuisine. Higher up at Cloud Yard, at 3,063 meters, Starbucks Fansipan—the highest Starbucks in Asia, which opened in March 2026 - has quickly become a new must-visit spot where guests can enjoy coffee amid the sea of clouds while gazing out over the Hoang Lien Son range.

The majestic spiritual-cultural complex that appears and disappears in the clouds further completes the Fansipan experience.

Still higher lies the spiritual-cultural ensemble featuring Kim Son Bao Thang Pagoda, the giant Amitabha Buddha statue, and the Arhat path veiled in mountain mist. The seamless sequence of experiences from the base to the summit shows how Fansipan has been developed into a relatively complete journey of discovery that blends scenery, culture, spirituality, and contemporary amenities.

This transformation continues with distinctive accommodation offerings. Hotel de la Coupole – MGallery Sa Pa, designed by architect Bill Bensley, fuses French haute couture fashion inspiration with the colors and patterns of Northwest ethnic textiles. The property adds a high-end lodging option for Sa Pa while demonstrating how local cultural values can be expressed through contemporary architecture and service.

Hotel de la Coupole has been likened by many international media outlets to “Switzerland in the heart of the Northwest Vietnam”.

Culture Trip’s decision to place Sa Pa among the Top 8 most amazing destinations in Southeast Asia therefore stems not only from its dramatic landscapes or distinctive climate. The highland town’s appeal today is the result of the interplay between nature, indigenous culture, and years of investment in infrastructure, products, and tourism services. In that journey, the Fansipan cable car and the broader experience ecosystem created by Sun Group have played a key role in transforming a once hard-to-reach peak into a tourism icon while expanding Sa Pa’s draw on the international map.
