Ha Long featured in Lonely Planet’s 2026 Fall Travel Trends List
Alongside global travel favorites such as Japan, Italy and idyllic destinations in the Southern Hemisphere, Vietnam is highlighted by Lonely Planet as an ideal choice for autumn adventures, thanks in large part to favorable weather conditions.
According to the renowned travel guide, fall is when Vietnam enters one of its most rewarding seasons for exploration, with each destination taking on a distinctive character.
“Fall sees Vietnam in its prime,” Lonely Planet writes. Hanoi cools down, making its maze of streets more pleasant to explore, while the terraced rice fields of Sa Pa and Ha Giang turn a mesmerizing golden hue ahead of the harvest. Farther south, travelers can still discover the charms of Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City despite occasional rain. Ha Long, meanwhile, offers the singular appeal of a spectacular seascape.

Ha Long Bay in autumn is defined by clear blue waters, mild weather and limestone islands stretching across the World Heritage landscape.
Lonely Planet draws particular attention to the bay’s autumn conditions, noting that “Dreamy Halong Bay is at its clearest and the warm waters are perfect for a dip.”
Autumn has long been considered one of the best times of year to explore Ha Long. As the intense heat of summer gives way to milder temperatures, soft autumn sunlight falls across the water and limestone formations, accentuating the bay’s expansive natural beauty.
But visitors are increasingly drawn to Ha Long not only for its scenery and pleasant climate. The destination now offers a much broader range of experiences, allowing a trip to extend well beyond a traditional cruise through the bay to include entertainment, leisure and resort stays onshore.
A journey can begin at Ha Long International Cruise Port, Vietnam’s first dedicated international passenger cruise port, developed by Sun Group. More than a gateway for large international cruise ships, the port is also a convenient starting point for exploring the World Heritage bay.
Located close to the beach and major entertainment complexes in Bai Chay, the cruise port allows travelers to easily combine time on the water with leisure and recreational activities ashore.

Ha Long International Cruise Port serves as the starting point for many journeys across the bay while providing convenient access to entertainment and resort facilities in Bai Chay.
After a cruise, visitors can ride the Queen Cable Car at Sun World Ha Long for sweeping views over the coastal city. On a clear autumn day, the journey across the gateway to Cua Luc Bay reveals a different side of Ha Long.
From the spacious cable-car cabins, the bay, Bai Chay Bridge and the city’s waterfront neighborhoods unfold in a single panoramic view.
The cable car arrives at Ba Deo Hill, where the Sun Wheel offers another elevated perspective over the bay and the city below. Visitors can also stroll through the Japanese Garden, home to centuries-old Japanese black pines, koi ponds and winding pathways — a tranquil retreat after a day of sightseeing.

From the Queen Cable Car and Sun Wheel, visitors can take in panoramic views of Ha Long’s waterfront, Bai Chay Bridge and the bay under clear autumn skies.
As dusk falls, the lighthouse area at Sun Elite City in Bai Chay comes alive with VUI-Fest Ha Long, a waterfront night market combining food and shopping.
Here, Sun Bavaria Ha Long offers locally crafted Sun KraftBeer alongside a menu of food in a bay-facing setting, extending the evening’s entertainment against the backdrop of the heritage landscape.

A growing range of accommodation options also makes it easier for travelers to tailor their stays to different needs.
Along Bai Chay Beach, Oakwood Ha Long offers spacious villas with generous living areas, making it particularly suitable for families or groups of friends seeking greater privacy.
For travelers looking to combine heritage sightseeing with relaxation in cooler autumn weather, the journey can continue to Quang Hanh. Hilton Quang Hanh Onsen Resort offers a wellness-focused stay centered on onsen bathing, using naturally heated mineral water in a tranquil valley setting.

An onsen experience at Hilton Quang Hanh offers another way to unwind during an autumn trip to Ha Long, with naturally heated mineral waters surrounded by a peaceful valley landscape.
Ha Long’s inclusion in Lonely Planet’s 2026 fall travel trends once again underscores the destination’s appeal during the changing of the seasons. The list itself was compiled using changes in Lonely Planet guidebook orders, with destinations ranked according to the largest increases between Aug. 20 and Sept. 20, 2026.
Beyond its natural scenery, Ha Long’s expanding range of onshore experiences gives travelers more reasons to extend their stay. After a day cruising among limestone islands, the journey can continue with panoramic cable-car views, dinner by the bay or a restorative soak in warm mineral waters.
Together, these experiences make autumn in Ha Long not simply a season for admiring a World Heritage landscape, but an opportunity to enjoy a more complete and varied holiday.
