1. A330 and Aviation Infrastructure Expansion Broaden Phu Quoc’s International Gateway
1.1. A330 Extends Phu Quoc’s Reach to Long-Haul Markets

On September 22, 2026, Sun PhuQuoc Airways took delivery of its first wide-body Airbus A330 at Phu Quoc International Airport.
On September 22, 2026, Sun PhuQuoc Airways (SPA) took delivery of its first wide-body Airbus A330, registered VN-A969, at Phu Quoc International Airport, marking the start of its plan to add eight A330 aircraft to its fleet by April 2027. On September 30, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) approved SPA to operate the A330 and expanded its approved area of operations to include Europe.

For Phu Quoc tourism, the significance of this move lies not simply in adding a new aircraft type, but in extending the destination’s reach to long-haul markets.
From November 13, 2026, the A330 is expected to operate SPA’s first international route between Phu Quoc and Moscow. The aircraft is then scheduled to be deployed on routes to Japan from January 2027 and Australia from May 2027, while also creating further opportunities to connect Phu Quoc with markets in Central Europe and Central Asia.
For international travellers, the value of direct flights goes beyond simply shortening travel time or distance. By eliminating stopovers and interruptions along the journey, they allow the holiday experience to begin from the moment of departure, giving visitors more time to fully enjoy their stay on the island.
The significance of these direct routes therefore extends far beyond a conventional transport solution. As distances to long-haul markets are effectively shortened, Phu Quoc is making a strategic transition from a regional destination into a major hub for international visitor flows. This infrastructure boost not only opens access to new source markets, but also creates broader room for the island’s resort and entertainment ecosystem to develop to international standards and strengthen its presence on the global tourism map.
1.2. Phu Quoc International Airport Expands Passenger Handling Capacity

Alongside the expansion of its flight network, Phu Quoc’s aviation infrastructure is also being upgraded towards a more integrated ecosystem. Under the latest revised master plan, Phu Quoc International Airport will cover a total area of 1,040.43 hectares. The existing T2 terminal and apron area is planned to accommodate approximately 42 aircraft parking stands, while around 45 additional stands will be added between T1 and the VIP/general aviation area. The aircraft maintenance hangar complex will be expanded to 30.4 hectares, while approximately 7.2 hectares will be allocated to aviation fuel facilities. Together with an in-flight catering facility and ground-handling services, these components will gradually create a more comprehensive aviation service chain within a single hub.
The airport’s service capacity will also be strengthened by the Phu Quoc Aviation Catering Facility, with a total investment of VND 2.4 trillion and a maximum capacity of 50,000 meals per day. Notably, the new master plan also allocates approximately 51 hectares for hotels, commercial and service facilities, offices and airline operations centres, together with 12.6 hectares for aviation training facilities. These components show that Phu Quoc International Airport is gradually evolving beyond its traditional role of handling passenger arrivals and departures to become a fully integrated aviation service hub.
From this aviation gateway, transport links to southern Phu Quoc are also being accelerated. The Phu Quoc LRT line, approximately 17.6 km long with a total investment of nearly VND 9 trillion, is expected, once completed, to reduce travel time from the airport to the APEC Convention Center and major resorts and entertainment complexes in southern Phu Quoc to around 20 minutes. Running in parallel is the ĐT.975 corridor, designed to be 62 metres wide with 10 traffic lanes, forming a multimodal transport axis connecting the airport with the APEC area and key tourism hubs in the south of the island.
According to the current plan, the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project is scheduled for completion and operation from April 2027, increasing annual passenger capacity to approximately 20–24 million by 2030. Beyond serving APEC 2027, the project is expected to help establish Phu Quoc as an important international aviation gateway, expanding direct connectivity with major economic and tourism centres across the region and the world, while creating further momentum for the island to strengthen its position on the global tourism map.
Phu Quoc is therefore advancing along a dual strategic axis: expanding its reach to long-haul markets while continuously upgrading infrastructure to accommodate large-scale passenger flows. The close integration of flight network expansion and infrastructure development is creating a strong launchpad for the island to enter a new phase of accelerated growth and further elevate its standing as an international-class destination.
2. International Arrivals Surge as Phu Quoc’s Global Appeal Becomes Increasingly Evident
These advances in connectivity are taking place at a time when travel demand for Phu Quoc is rising rapidly, particularly from international markets.

According to the An Giang Province Electronic Information Portal, international arrivals to Phu Quoc in the first nine months of 2026 increased by 60.2%, nearly twice the overall growth rate of total visitor arrivals. This momentum highlights the island’s increasingly strong appeal to international markets. Against this backdrop, expanding aviation capacity will not only help Phu Quoc reach more distant markets, but also create further room for international visitor numbers to continue growing in the years ahead.
Yet the appeal of a resort destination is not measured solely by how many travellers it can bring to the island. More importantly, once visitors arrive in Phu Quoc, the destination needs to give them enough reasons to stay longer, experience more and turn their trip into a truly fulfilling holiday.
This is precisely where southern Phu Quoc is developing a distinctive advantage, with an increasingly integrated ecosystem of resorts, entertainment, cuisine and experiences.
3. Sun Group’s Ecosystem Strengthens Phu Quoc’s Appeal and Extends the Visitor Journey
In southern Phu Quoc, Sun Group has gradually developed a chain of destinations and experiences stretching from Kem Beach and Mui Ong Doi to Sunset Town and Hon Thom, bringing together a wide range of holiday experiences within a single journey: luxury resorts, island escapes, architecture, art, cuisine and entertainment.

3.1 Hon Thom Phu Quoc – A Full Day of Island Experiences, Entertainment and Cuisine
The journey to Sun World Hon Thom begins with a ride on the world’s longest three-wire sea-crossing cable car, recognised by Guinness World Records. From high above the sea, the An Thoi archipelago gradually unfolds like a multi-layered tropical landscape: lush green islands rising from turquoise waters, bright stretches of sand tracing the shoreline, and the sea shifting in colour with the changing sunlight. As the cable car approaches Hon Thom, the panorama opens up even further, transforming the experience from simply admiring the scenery to truly stepping into a distinctive island world.

On the island, Aquatopia Water Park and Exotica Village create vibrant, high-energy layers of entertainment. In 2026, Sun World Hon Thom continued to expand its offerings with Wavy Whirl, a next-generation PowerRAPIDS water slide making its world debut, along with a series of new attractions at Exotica Village.

The addition of the Wavy Whirl slide positions Sun World Hon Thom at the forefront of global amusement and entertainment trends.
But Hon Thom is not just about water-based attractions and thrill rides. Santo Beach Club adds a more relaxed seaside dimension, with an infinity pool, tropical-inspired surroundings, dining and beachfront entertainment. It is becoming a new stop where visitors can spend more time on the island, rather than simply completing the cable car–theme park journey before heading back.

Cuisine is also an integral part of the Hon Thom experience, with options such as Mango Restaurant and Coconut Restaurant, along with a network of food and beverage outlets throughout the entertainment complex. Together, these offerings allow visitors to spend almost an entire day on the island without interrupting the flow of their experience.
In the next phase of development, Hon Thom will add a new layer of luxury accommodation with Rixos Phu Quoc, the first project in Asia under the Rixos brand. From a day-trip entertainment destination, Hon Thom is gradually evolving into an integrated island destination combining beach experiences, entertainment, cuisine, relaxation and resort stays, making it increasingly well suited to the needs of multi-day international holidays.
3.2 Sunset Town Phu Quoc – From Sunset to Vibrant Seaside Nights
While Hon Thom embodies the free-spirited charm of island life, Sunset Town – Thị trấn Hoàng Hôn brings a vibrant rhythm of experiences to the southwestern coast of Phu Quoc.

Sunset Town – Thị trấn Hoàng Hôn offers visitors a vibrant and unforgettable array of experiences
Rows of streets cascading down the hillside towards the sea, open plazas, An Thoi Station and Kiss Bridge together create a layered architectural skyline along the island’s southwestern coast. As the sun gradually sinks into the sea, golden-orange light washes over the rooftops, plazas and water, transforming Sunset Town from a daytime sightseeing destination into a gathering place of light, music and nighttime experiences.
A highlight of this experience lineup is Symphony of the Sea. The upgraded 2026 edition features a 200-metre water stage, a fleet of 14 jetskis, and three times more fireworks than the previous season, combining water sports performances, music, lasers and lighting against the backdrop of the ocean.
This is followed by Kiss of the Sea, a multimedia water show that brings together performers, music, lighting, fire, lasers and visual effects, taking a day in southern Phu Quoc to its climax with spectacular fireworks over the sea.
Cuisine also becomes part of the nighttime experience at Sunset Town. Sun Bavaria GastroPub allows visitors to combine dinner with Sun KraftBeer and a performance atmosphere overlooking the sea, while La Festa Phu Quoc, Curio Collection by Hilton adds a premium accommodation option right in the heart of the town.

Sun Bavaria GastroPub Phu Quoc is a stylish dining and entertainment destination in southern Phu Quoc.
As a result, Sunset Town is more than just a place to watch the sunset. It extends the visitor experience well into the night through architecture, cuisine, live performances, fireworks and accommodation, helping answer the question of “what can visitors do after 6 p.m.?” at a seaside resort destination.

3.3 Bai Kem Beach – Ong Doi Cape: A Luxury Resort Haven in Southern Phu Quoc
In contrast to the vibrant energy of Hon Thom and Sunset Town, Bai Kem Beach and Ong Doi Cape offer a more refined retreat, where visitors can enjoy turquoise waters, privacy and high-end resort experiences.
At Bai Kem Beach, JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa, New World Phu Quoc Resort and Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay offer distinctive accommodation experiences, ranging from story-rich architecture and villas inspired by traditional Vietnamese coastal villages to modern family-friendly resort living.
Not far from Bai Kem Beach, Premier Village Phu Quoc Resort at Ong Doi Cape offers a secluded retreat surrounded by the sea on both sides, with 215 villas and a comprehensive range of premium resort facilities.

Set on a rare peninsula bordered by the sea on both sides, Premier Village Phu Quoc Resort is the only place in Vietnam where guests can enjoy both sunrise and sunset from the same location.
While Hon Thom and Sunset Town offer vibrant, high-energy experiences, Bai Kem Beach and Ong Doi Cape add a more private, comfortable and luxurious resort dimension to the holiday. This contrast allows visitors to move seamlessly between relaxation, exploration and entertainment without leaving southern Phu Quoc.
In the near future, Bai Dat Do is also set to emerge as a new hub for resorts, dining and entertainment, with the presence of a number of renowned international brands. The development will further expand accommodation and MICE capacity, helping elevate Phu Quoc in general, and southern Phu Quoc in particular, into an international destination for both tourism and major events.
4. From Long-Haul Connectivity to International Destination Status

Taken as a whole, the strategic developments unfolding across Phu Quoc are creating an increasingly complete chain of connectivity and experience: an expanding flight network makes it easier for travellers from around the world to reach the island; upgraded airport infrastructure strengthens passenger handling capacity; and a high-end ecosystem of resorts and entertainment encourages visitors to stay longer and experience more.
For long-haul international travellers, geographical distance is increasingly being bridged by direct air connections. As the journey becomes more seamless from the very beginning, visitors can devote more of their time to discovering Phu Quoc and enjoying a complete island holiday — from turquoise seas and white-sand beaches to overwater cable car rides, theme parks, cuisine, art and spectacular nights illuminated by fireworks.
Within this broader picture, the arrival of the first Airbus A330 is not only a milestone in the development of Sun PhuQuoc Airways, but also an important piece in strengthening the destination’s overall strategic capacity: extending its reach to global markets, accommodating large-scale visitor flows and reinforcing its international stature.
As international connectivity, passenger handling capacity and the quality of visitor experiences continue to advance together, Phu Quoc gains a stronger foundation for consolidating its position on the global tourism map — not only as an island blessed with exceptional natural beauty, but as a world-class resort and entertainment destination capable of delivering longer stays, diverse experiences, large-scale visitor capacity and major international events.
