Safety and Security Emerge as a Key Strength of Vietnam’s Tourism Sector

The Safety and Security pillar is one of the 17 pillars used by the WEF to assess the conditions for travel and tourism development across 110 economies in the 2026 TTDI.

Under the WEF’s methodology, this pillar evaluates the extent to which residents, tourists and businesses may be exposed to security risks. The factors considered include confidence in the local police, perceived safety when walking alone at night, and the homicide rate. The indicators are normalized on a scale from 1 to 7.

According to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, Safety and Security is one of Vietnam’s highest-ranked pillars in the 2026 TTDI. Compared with the 2024 assessment, the pillar rose 18 places to 9th globally. The result reflects a positive assessment of Vietnam’s stable, safe and secure socio-political environment amid continued global uncertainty.

Safety and security are also becoming increasingly important considerations for international travelers when choosing a destination, alongside cost, transport connectivity, service quality and the diversity of experiences.

Vietnam Rises 7 Places in Travel and Tourism Development

Beyond its strong performance in Safety and Security, the 2026 TTDI also points to a broader improvement in the overall environment for travel and tourism development in Vietnam.

Vietnam scored 4.15 points, ranking 52nd out of 110 economies, up 7 places from 2024. According to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, Vietnam was also among the economies showing some of the strongest improvements in scores during the 2024–2026 period. In addition to ranking 9th in Safety and Security, several other pillars also placed relatively high:

- Price Competitiveness: 7th

- Cultural Resources: 21st

- Natural Resources: 22nd

- Air Transport Infrastructure: 34th

The Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) was developed by the WEF to assess the factors and policies that support the sustainable and resilient development of the travel and tourism sector. Rather than directly measuring visitor numbers, tourism revenue or spending, the index focuses on the underlying conditions that enable a destination to develop over the long term. The 2026 TTDI comprises 5 subindexes, 17 pillars and 102 individual indicators.

Against a backdrop of continued growth in international tourism, alongside ongoing geopolitical, cost and infrastructure challenges, Vietnam’s high ranking in Safety and Security remains a notable advantage in strengthening the country’s attractiveness and competitiveness as a destination.
